Geleneksel ev mimarisinde toprak, taş, tuğla, ağaç olmak üzere dört çeşit malzeme kullanılmıştır. Topraktan yapılan binalara kerpiç, taşdan ve tuğladan yapılanlara kârgir, ağaçtan yapılanlara ahşap veya yansı kârgir, yansı ahşap olanlara yarım kârgir bina denilmektedir. Bütün bu yapı malzemeleri, Türk ev mimarisi oluşumunda bölgelerin bünyesinde bulundurduktan özelliklere göre kullanım görmüş ve ev mimarisi o malzeme ile adlandırılmıştır.
